The Demoman: Tomb Raider: Underworld2009-09-28 00:00:00Christopher Livingston is a freelance writer with plenty of time for games but not enough money to buy them. Thus was born The Demoman; a shadowy yet helpful figure dedicated not to helping you decide which expensive games to buy, but which free game demos to play.
The great thing about Tomb Raider games is that they give you an outlet for the inevitable rage that builds up from playing Tomb Raider games. That outlet is Lara Croft herself: she's just so enjoyable to punish when you're pissed off.
You can run her into walls, drown her in the surf, or make her fall to her death from clifftops--and as gracefully as she springs around in the demo of Tomb Raider: Underworld, man, she falls like a fucking brick when you want her to. Arms pinwheeling, legs kicking, she plummets face-first into the ground with a satisfying thud. Much in the same way World of Warcraft now lets you play Peggle to stave off the boredom of playing World of Warcraft, Tomb Raider lets you terrorize Lara to relieve the frustration of playing Tomb Raider.
When Lara isn't dying accidentally or being killed on purpose, she's hunting through ruins in Thailand, extinguishing whatever wildlife she comes ac...

Waaah....Waaah... I'm The Penguin.2009-09-22 00:00:00Loading... is brought to you today by Dark Messiah: Might And Magic.Want to take a stab at Sareth's weapons and magic training for yourself? Well, here's your chance, as the singleplayer demo of Dark Messiah is now available.--More good news! Our EVE Online site is open again, thanks to Phil's mad piloting skills. I would like to personally welcome Valerie Massey (formerly of NCSoft) back into the fray as the new EVE Online community representative. It's good to have you back Val.
Some games attempt to make their mark based on the gameplay. World of Warcraft and EVE Online are great examples of this. How many of you can name two or more developers of those games? For a game that has yet to be released it is even more challenging to get the attention of the public. Games in development require hype to attract the eyes of the MMOG masses. Most companies showcase the game itself, giving you tasty little morsels of what is to come.StarGate Worlds, Age of Conan, Lord of the Rings Online, Pirates of the Burning Sea and Chronicles of Spellborn are excellent examples of companies putting the game first.
Other companies prefer to highlight the pedigree of the developers. Some of them give their management team titles like Assistant Manager or "Ass Man" for short. Others have developers who like to stir up the pot, dropping into sites like the super villain "The Penguin" on an uber-hovering umbrella screaming "Waaah...waaah...nyargh..waaaaah...." at the masses who vocally abuse them at every opportunity.
It goes something like this:
The Penguin (or the Ass Man) drops into the Rains of Hell website and exclaims, "Waaah, Nyargh......here are some screenshots. Join my legions....You will become my minions....Waaaah...waaah!"
Rains of Hell members - F-U Ass Man. [CRASH!] Your game sucks and so did the one you made seven year ago. [BAM!] Go away or we'll play March of the Penguins until you do! [POW!]
The Penguin returns (The Sequel?) and after giving his required super villain gloating speech proclaims, "Here is a video... I knew you all wanted to see it here first... Waaah... Gnarrsh... Waaaah...Waahhh..... Other sites will complain, but I'm The Penguin and none shall sway my way....Wahhh. Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh..... Wah. "
Rains of Hell members - F-U Ass Man. [SMASH!] Remember the last time you made a game that anyone played? [KAPOW!] Neither do we. [KABLOOIE!] Back into the closet with Tom Cruise before we rip those stupid fake flippers off of your feet. [BOOM!]
The Penguin Strikes Back - Insert more gloating speeches and then, "I knew you would like that video....Waaaah...waaaah.... I'll be back with more my minions.. Waah... Gnarl... Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!"
Reading the real conversations between Developer A and Community Z is like taking two interview transcripts, taking the interviewer comments from one, the interviewee comments from the other and putting them together in one article. It's funny, but it doesn't make any sense. Uber guild versus once uber developers. Let us ...
SSI's "Gold Box" Series2009-09-18 00:00:00Dungeons & Dragons is no stranger to computers. Like Star Trek, the D&D experience is one of the first things that young programmers in the mid-'70s tried to simulate on mainframe computers -- going back to the creation of games like DND and NetHack. All of these games had a problem, though. The computers of the day were simply not powerful enough to do more than represent the mere basics of Dungeons & Dragons. What players usually got was some type of warrior onscreen in a randomly generated dungeon that fought randomly generated creatures for randomly generated treasures. Even if the particular game you were playing simulated gaining experience levels, there was never any sense of story advancement or accomplishment. In short, what was missing was the adventure.
Fast forward many years to 1985. TSR, the Wisconsin company that produces Dungeons & Dragons, is tired of watching games like the Ultima series -- that are, in part, based on concepts "liberated" from D&D -- make oodles of money. Meanwhile, the original game languishes in th...
Communicating with Voice Chat Online: What You Wil2009-09-16 00:00:00If you're like me, maybe it's easier to send an email than make a phone call. Perhaps you find it simpler to reach level 60 on World of Warcraft than talk to a pretty girl at a party. Or maybe your mind finds it easier to solve partial differential equations than figure out what women are looking for. I used to think this way, until I treated dating as a science. As a science and math nerd, I started making and testing hypothesis after hypothesis, figuring out what it takes to get the girl. I don't have great looks,...
Acclaim CEO Howard Marks and Free-to-Play MMOs2009-09-10 00:00:009Dragons
For game analysts, journalists and fans, companies like Acclaim are often hard to get a handle on. Since the company's rebirth in 2005, CEO Howard Marks has set out to bring a traditionally Eastern vision of MMORPG business practices to the Western market. He's on the vanguard of a new trend in the genre, but one that eschews the traditional measures of success. People can't count box sales, Acclaim's games don't sit in Wal-Mart and there are no subscription numbers to speak of, the games are not only free to download, but free to play. Yet, despite their lack of press and sexy statistics, Acclaim and a half dozen other companies have carved out extremely profitable games that reach far more players than the average MMO people see on the shelf at GameStop.
CEO Howard Marks recently took the time to talk to us about his company, its four games and how they've helped bring variety to the business of MMOs in North America and Europe.
"[Our business model] is not yet, I would say, mainstream," Marks said. His games all follow a single motto, they're free-to-play. It's a marketing buzz word that sounds great, but obviously doesn't mean Acclaim runs a charity organization.
"In general, people get the conce...

Approximate Paladin TPS (PRE 2.1)2009-09-01 00:00:00A general guide to our threat scalability in regards to spell damage. Note: A few things are off, the consecration formula for one, and me forgetting about the Precision talent for two...but by a marginal amount (around 5 TPS per tick). I will correct it and remove this message in the future. Possibly. Keep in mind that this is a very rough estimate, I wouldn't assume that these are exact values. Everything here is also calculated for 2.0.10 on the day BEFORE 2.1. I will have to change this later when I have time. The following talents are assumed:Improved Righteous Fury: 1.9 threat multiplierImproved Judgement: 8 second Judgement cooldown.5/5 One-Handed Weapon Specialization: 1.1 damage multiplierThese calculations assume that Seal of Righteousness, Judgement of Righteousness, Consecration and Holy Shield are continuously being spammed. I'm not calculating in Reckoning procs, spell/melee crits, or any other miscellaneous things that generate threat, so your actual threat generation is probably a bit higher than what I listed.Just as a comparison, high end warriors (according to what I have read, I'm not a warrior) can produce TPS at around 1,000 on bosses. High end paladins with JotC up can probably push around 700 to 800 TPS, (estimated guess including all of the crap I left out of this article) possibly more (trying to be conservative). If anyone can shed light on the TPS generation of the other tanking classes or any corrections to my calculations below...
